Shiny Object Syndrome, explained

In this blog post, I wanted to share my insights on this topic of Shiny Object Syndrome and why I am so passionate about helping people overcome this.

Shiny Object Syndrome is when you're easily distracted by new and exciting things, constantly jumping from one idea or opportunity to the next without ever finishing or fully committing to any of them.

It’s like chasing after every "shiny" thing that catches your attention, whether it’s a new business idea, tool, or trend, instead of staying focused on what really matters.

It can lead to wasted time, energy, and resources because you're always starting but rarely finishing.

To start with, watch this short video where I explain what it is and also, share a bit about my solution to help "detox" from this by going through my 100% free challenge.

Distractions from the things that matter

Even though the title of this website, challenge, and blog, is all around "Shiny Object Syndrome" - to me it goes a lot deeper and broader.

It is not just about business.

It is not just about buying things you don't need.

It is about bad habits in your life that are truly hurting you.

Sometimes these habits are so ingrained, you can't even see them anymore.

Some examples:

  • Binge-watching TV shows or movies for hours
  • Doomscrolling on social media feeds
  • Constantly checking and responding to emails or messages
  • Procrastinating on important tasks by doing trivial ones
  • Spending excessive time on websites that negatively impact mental health, like porn or toxic forums
  • Hitting the snooze button repeatedly and oversleeping
  • Spending too much time on video games
  • Mindlessly browsing the internet or watching YouTube videos
  • Checking notifications and apps throughout the day
  • Online shopping for things you don’t need
  • Watching excessive news or talk shows
  • Getting caught up in gossip or drama (in your personal life, or through the media)
  • Excessively daydreaming or fantasizing instead of taking action
  • Multi-tasking without completing any one task effectively
  • Engaging in negative self-talk that leads to inaction
  • Allowing clutter and disorganization to steal your focus and efficiency
  • Neglecting physical health by skipping daily stretching, regular exercise, or other activities that promote well-being

You get the idea...

So what can we do about it?

How to Detox this Shiny Object Syndrome?

Shiny Object Syndrome (SOS) is a huge problem that can hold you back in your business, especially if you're trying to build an online business.

However, it is not just about business.

It translates to other areas of your life.

And while I am no expert on on many of the points listed above, I wanted to do my part by creating this website.

I created a free challenge, where you get an email every day or two, with action steps to implement in your life to help you overcome this problem.

The emails cover things such as:

  • Turning off phone and desktop notifications to eliminate distractions
  • Deleting phone apps that aren't being used or deleting those that are used too much!
  • Confronting the state of your finances and monthly subscriptions and ruthlessly cancelling the ones that you shouldn't be paying
  • Unsubscribing from email lists that don't benefit you
  • Learning how to manage your email inbox to reduce distractions and time-wasting

When you join the challenge, there are no upsell.

There is nothing to buy.

It is 100% free with the intention to reach as many people as possible.

You can get a taste of the various steps you'll get in the free challenge but reading through our blog.

I also created a "Partners" page to encourage other people to contribute to the growth of this website to make this a super helpful resource with a variety of practical advice on all the things that essentially prevent people from pursuing their goals and living their best lives.

Join the Shiny Object Detox Challenge

A series of emails over the next week with practical exercises to help eliminate distractions and more focused on the things that matter to you.
